Lightroom 4 on Mac App Store

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Lightroom 4 is now available on the App Store.

Lightroom 4 on the App Store

Lightroom 4 now joins other Adobe products that are available on App Store – Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements, and Revel (these applications are already available on App Store.

Lightroom 4 is priced at $149, the same as the boxed product on adobe.com. Here are a few important key points about Lightroom 4 on App Store from Tim Hogarty – Lightroom Product Manager:

  • This is a single platform license for Mac only.
  • Updates will take place through the Mac App Store, not via Adobe.com for this version of Lightroom.
  • There is no upgrade pricing available on the Mac App Store for Lightroom customers who own Lightroom 1, 2 or 3.
  • There is no guarantee that upgrade pricing will be available to Mac App Store Lightroom 4 customers when Lightroom 5 and future versions of Lightroom are released.

Enjoy! :-)

Rendering Intent in Lightroom

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Rendering Intent in Lightroom with Marek Mularczyk - SaiTraining.co.ukPrint Module in Lightroom is a very interesting feature you can use for printing images straight from Lightroom.

You won’t need to export images form Lightroom into Photoshop and then save them and print them. No, now you can do all of it (at least in many cases) in Lightroom, in the Print Module. This is one of the strengths of Lightroom when compared to other photo editors, that’s what makes Lightroom a favourite editing tool among professional photographers.

When printing from the Print Module in Lightroom, as you get to the bottom of the panel on the right side of your screen, you’re going to find the Color Management section as shown on the screenshot above.

First, select the profile for the printer and then when you get to the bottom section, you may start wondering what this Rendering Intent is and what it does…

Here’s what the options do:

Relative Intent – preserves all of the in-gamut colours and moves all the out-of-gamut colours to the closest colours within the gamut. Use it when you have less colours that are out-of-gamut.

Perceptual Intent – tries to preserve the visual representation of the colours and moves out-of-gamut colours to colours that can be printed. Use it when you have many out-of-gamut colours.

I hope this clarifies the feature a bit. Any questions, let me know.

Enjoy! :-)

Post-Crop Vignetting in Lightroom

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Post-Crop Vignetting in Lightroom by Marek MularczykIf you have been using Lightroom 3 (and now Lightroom 4), you may have noticed Post-Crop Vignetting in the Effects panel. You can also find it in Photoshop nowadays as well.

Lightroom brings in a nice feature within the Effects panel with Post-Crop Vignetting: Style presets.

There are a few options here:

  • Color Priority
  • Highlight Priority
  • Paint Overlay.

I find Highlight Priority to be slightly less subtle than Color Priority, so I would use Color Priority a bit more. However, Highlight Priority preset is better at recovering highlights in the images, obviously.

In this case, when you work with highlights that you want to recover, Highlight Priority would be the best choice. Keep in mind one thing, though, Highlight Priority may show some colour shifts, especially in darker areas.

Leica M9 and Lightroom 4

How about buying a Leica camera and getting a Free Lightroom 4? Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

Leica announced that it will bundle Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 with most of its cameras – we’re talking the latest version of Lightroom that has just came out, £100 worth software.

Lightroom 4 will be supplied with the following cameras:

  • Leica S2/S2-P,
  • Leica M9/M9-P,
  • Leica X1 and
  • Leica D-Lux 5.

Leica cameras are fully integrated with Lightroom software, and Leica has worked together with Adobe for  along time. Just to give you an example, Leica colour and lens profiles are available in the lens correction adjustments in Lightroom.

The other thing is, Leica cameras cost thousands of pounds, keep that in mind… Besides that, enjoy! :-)

Lightroom 4 issues, explained

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Lightroom 4Tom Hogarty from Adobe posted information about some issues with Lightroom 4 that Adobe are working on. These are the issues that were discovered after the release of Lightroom 4.

These are some of the issues in Lightroom 4 that Adobe are working on:

When Lightroom 3 came out, the Tone Curve panel added a “point curve” adjustment option. If you used the point curve adjustment in Lightroom 3 and you move your catalogue to Lightroom 4, you are going to loose the adjustment.

There may be some issues when launching third-party applications from within Lightroom, i.e. some people complained that they couldn’t launch Nik software using “Edit in…” The issue seems to appear on both platforms, and it’s connected with the third-party plug-ins and applications.

Running Lightroom Catalogue on many machines?

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Relink folders with Marek Mularczyk - SaiTraining.co.ukRunnning Lightroom Catalogue on many machines? How about running the same Lightroom Catalogue on many machines? Is that possible?

As you may be aware, you cannot run a Lightroom Catalogue on a networked drive.

You can run a Lightroom Catalogue on your computer and keep the images on a network drive

  • you can keep images anywhere you want and just point Lightroom to the images folder, I keep all the images on an external hard drive so I can move around with a hard drive – I use a small portable hard drive for that).
