Canon PowerShot G1X preview

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

In the last couple of months, we have seen a number of mirrorless cameras emerge from major camera brands like Canon and Nikon, and some of them become quite sophisticated at what they do.

Now, Canon shows a preview of its’ brand new mirrorless camera – PowerShot G1X. The camera looks very similar to other existing G-series models, however it has some different, exciting(?) features. It has a large sensor and a 4x zoom lens (equivalent to 28-112mm). It also has a number of manual controls (that’s something quite common to G-series). Canon says that it will be a perfect companion to a high-end DSLR camera. The price quoted for this camera is around $799.

The sensor in G1X is 18.7 x 14mm, so it’s a bit smaller than the one used in DSLR cameras, but bigger than in most compacts. Because the sensor in G1X is just a bit smaller than in DSLRs, we may expect a very high quality images from this camera.

G1X is not supposed to replace G12, even though they have a lot in common. It is just a supplement to the line of Canon cameras. An aperture range on G1X is quite good as well – F2.8-5.8. And it’s quite compact in size thanks to fixed lens on the camera.

We shall expect some tests from the camera soon. And, because it is a G-series camera, it shoots Raw!

Enjoy! :-)

Fujifilm X-Pro1 Photos and Specs Leaked

Monday, January 9th, 2012

A few weeks ago I was writing about the specifications of a new Nikon D4 that leaked. Apparently, this is not the only camera with leaked information.

Here’s another camera with leaked specifications: Fujifilm X-Pro1:

Fujifilm X-Pro1

As I have found out, some press releases of this camera appeared in few places, including some websites. Here’s the information I managed to find:

Fujifilm X-Pro1 specs:

  • 16MP CMOS sensor
  • second-generation hybrid viewfinder
  • launches with 3 fast prime lenses (18mm f/2, 35mm f/1.4, and 60mm f/2.4).

The camera has a nice, sleek “vintage” look and digital technology. It looks more like a camera from the eighties… However, the camera will have metal mounts and manual controls…. and it’s digital!

We’ll see how much it’s going to cost, whether it will be affordable. Some sources quote the price of 1300 Euros with  the 35mm lens.

Equipment guide with Terry White

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed your Christmas, and we’re back to “business” ;-)

Today, I’d like to share with you a link to a post on equipment. When you start in photography, you most probably have lots of questions. Nobody wants to buy the wrong gear, right?

It’s hard to set up your equipment (in a studio as an example) without breaking the bank. So I have found a very interesting post by Terry White in which Terry reveals what equipment he uses in his studio. And I’m talking, everything he uses, from studio lighting to lenses and cameras etc.

In the post, Terry is talking about cameras, lenses, lights, as well as tripods he’s using when shooting, or even camera bags and sound system he uses. Lots of useful information for every photographer, even if you don’t shoot in studio.

I hope you will find it as useful as I did.

Here’s the link for you:

Peak District images

Peak District by Marek MularczykToday, I’d like to share some images from my recent trip with you.

I went to a beautiful region of Peak District – a beautiful mountain region in central England. Most of the Peak District area falls within the Peak District National Park. An interesting thing about the Peak District National Park is that it became the first national park in Britain in 1951.

Recently I went to do some mountaineering in the Peak District area, an amazing area rich in contrast and beautiful nature. As it was a very windy day, there weren’t that many people as you can see from the images. I hope you will enjoy it.

Beautiful Fujifilm add

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Fuji has released a beautiful ad for Fujifilm Finepix cameras.

As I have found out, apparently it is am X-rated ad on Asian markets. It is an ad for Fujifilm Finepix X100 and it’s  a work of a photographer – James Leung.

It’s a beautiful black and white ad, only 1min 50sec long. What Fuji is trying to express here is that you can take your camera anywhere, carry it around, and photograph more than just sunsets and sunrises.

As it was said, the text that appears at the beginning of the ad, ”浪摄流” , means “walk anywhere and photograph anywhere”.

Enjoy!

Is Kodak going…?

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Kodak logoI have just heard some bad news about Kodak – the company behind so many things in photography, like film.

It seems like a part of the twenty first century when some of the big companies are disappearing… Apparently, Eastman Kodak is close to bankruptcy. Kodak used to be one of the biggest “players” in the photography league. I still remember Kodak film and i remember using Kodak photo paper when I worked for a photo lab.

Today, as I found out, Kodak’s shares sell close to $1 and it looses money very quickly (something like $70 million a month). They also have some lawsuits against Apple and RIM (maker of Blackberry). And if you think that not that long ago, Kodak used to be famous all over the world, known everywhere and used by most of the populations (one of the most famous and remembered brands by Kodak was Instamatic camera).

The times of film are long gone, the digital rules the world now and more and more people don’t even use their cameras nowadays, instead they use their mobile phones. So the “king of film” is dying… The last yellow-boxed Kodachrome rolled out the door of a Mexican factory in 2009. It is s shame that a company that was created in 1880 by George Eastman may be gone quite soon… As late as 1976, Kodak commanded 90% of film sales and 85% of camera sales in the U.S., according to a 2005 case study for Harvard Business School.

Kodak is sliding down, loosing money all the time, according to the information on the web, apparently Kodak “hasn’t had a profitable year since 2007″. We just need to believe that Kodak will “make it” and will survive the hard times. Hopefully they will.

The world’s largest photo!

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Get a preview of the world’s largest photo – the 70GB(!) photo of Budapest.

A group of young Hungarian photographers created a massive photo of Budapest. They used two 25MP cameras with 400m lenses with 1.4X converters. The image consists of 5400 photographs – 24 rows of 210 images each. Quite impressive, isn’t it?

They were supplied with a workstation with 24GB of RAM memory (by one of the big computing brands, not to mention them here), 6TB hard disk and twin 4-core Xeon processors. But listen to this:

The final image is:

590508 x 120750 pixels! That’s 71.3GPx! To complete the image, it took 55 hours of work to compile it and the final image was a 350GB file!

Here’s the link for you where you can find the image (you will need to have Silverlight installed):
