Why do I need the latest version of Lightroom or Photoshop?

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Adobe DNG ConverterWelcome to today’s post. I know what you’re thinking -  I need the latest version of Photoshop or Lightroom to get all the new features, bugs and fixes. Well, yes obviously but I actually had something else in mind.

Following the yesterday’s post, I wanted to talk a bit more about camera support in Camera Raw (by the way, Camera Raw found in Lightroom and Photoshop, and Bridge is the same, so Camera Raw 6 is found in Photoshop CS5, Bridge CS5, and Lightroom 3). In case you missed yesterday’s post, here’s the link for you:

Lightroom/Photoshop doesn’t support my camera…

What I wanted to talk about today, is the following question I get asked quite a lot on my Lightroom and Photoshop training for Photographers:

” Why do I need to have the latest version of Photoshop/Lightroom to get my camera supported? Why older versions of Photoshop/Lightroom don’t support new cameras? “

My answer is: You don’t have to have the latest version of Photoshop/Lightroom to work with your raw images from a new camera. You can access your raw images in Lightroom 1 and 2, and in Photoshop CS2, CS3, and CS4 as well. However, there is a trick here… Well, not really a trick, just kidding ;-)

You can access your raw images by using the Adobe DNG Converter. This is one of the advantages of using DNG – backward compatibility. Let me explain before I give you a link to the DNG Converter.

There are a number of advantages of using DNG files as opposed to the raw format from your camera (remember, every camera uses a slightly different raw specification, so raw files from different cameras, even from the same manufacturer, are different. Here are some advantages:

  • DNG files are smaller, so you save disk space
  • DNG file format is open-source, which means that it is widely available for developers to contribute to the development of the format
  • All the adjustments, keywords, and all metadata is stored in the file, so you don’t have to worry about using sidecar files

Which file format you choose is completely up to you, these are just some of the advantages of using the DNG file format and the Converter to convert your raw files.

Finally, let me give you a link to the DNG Converter:

I hope you found it useful and I hope to see you here tomorrow for a great photography post.

Potential JPEG Bug in Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw 6.4

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Lightroom updatesHello everyone. Here’s an information we received from Adobe.

There is a potential severe bug introduced in Lightroom 3.4 and Camera Raw 6.4 update. This doesn’t include everyone, so no reasons to panic.

This only affects people, who save their metadata to JPEG files. Up to date, this bug has only been found to involve one camera – Hp Photosmart R607.

The scenario is very rare, and the Adobe team don’t believe that all the users need to revert to the previous update. They’re working on fixing the issue, and they intend to make new updates (named Lightroom 3.4.1 and Camera Raw 6.4.1) by Friday, 27th of May.

Thank you, Adobe, for revealing this information to us, users of their software. We’ll await the new updates that fix this bug.

That’s it for today. Till tomorrow!

Camera Raw in Adobe Bridge

Camera Raw plugin

Camera Raw has changed a lot in the last couple of years. It has matured, it has improved a lot.

Nowadays, Camera Raw can read not just raw files but also Jpeg and Tiff.

And the best thing is, Camera Raw is free! And it comes with Adobe Bridge so you don’t even have to open Photoshop to edit the images. It depends how you’re going to edit them, Camera Raw is not as advanced as Photoshop, for some tasks you will need to open Photoshop anyway.

There is a lot you can do within Camera Raw, so why not use this opportunity and use it from within Bridge without launching Photoshop? That’s what I’m going to show you in the video that I have created.

So learn how to edit your images with Camera Raw in Adobe Bridge CS5 .

So enjoy watching! :-)

Removing Camera Noise

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Almost every photographer needs to deal with noise in his/her images at certain point. This is something that is hard to avoid, especially when you shoot in low light conditions.

Camera Noise Removal is an important part of a digital photographer workflow to achieve a pleasurable effect with images that were shot in difficult light conditions. Noise in digital images is an equivalent of grain on film. Sometimes it may even look like film grain, however most of the time it looks more like colour artifacts.

Often the photographer may be challenged by difficult situation when shooting in low light – shall I shot at low ISO and get a blurry image or shall I shot at high ISO and get image with noise? Most photographers will go for a high ISO image with grain and then will use imaging software to remove noise. And that’s where the Camera Raw Noise Reduction makes a big difference, especially now with Camera Raw 6!

That’s why I created a video for you to watch. It shows how to deal with camera noise using Camera Raw 6 (found in Bridge CS5 and Photoshop CS5). I’m going to post it here tomorrow so stay with me.

Have a great day! :-)
