Removing EXIF in Photoshop

Good morning! :-)

Have you ever tried to remove EXIF information from the files in Photoshop? When you take photos, your camera automatically saves all the technical information about the photo – this is EXIF. To access EXIF in Photoshop, you can go to  File -> File Info, then Camera Data category in the dialog box that opens:

File Info in PhotoshopThis displays all the information registered by the camera including aperture settings, shutter speed and even whether flash was used or not.

What if you want to remove the EXIF? The information in Camera Data category is not editable. Here is the trick:

Go to Save for Web and Devices, File -> Save for Web & Devices:

On the right side of the screen, under Convert to sRGB, go to the submenu: Metadata and choose what you want to include with your file. To remove EXIF, just choose Copyright or None.

New Lens Correction in Lightroom

Hello everyone. I am pretty sure you have heard about the lens correction  that detects your camera/lens and tries to adjust the issue (unless you have been living in some remote place than you may not have heard about it… ;-)  ).

When you import the images into Lightroom, it tries to detect the camera/ lens combination and correct the lens distortions.

The Metadata  for identifying lenses is becoming a standard but it is not yet. With the recent release of EXIF 2.3 it comes closer however there is no official standard of writing the lens metadata so sometimes Lightroom may not get it right and may not know what lens was used. Adobe is working on it all the time and they are bringing more lens profiles even though some “popular” lenses may not be there yet.

Even if your lens is not there yet, you can manually adjust controls or you can build your own profile using Lens Profile Creator. There are quite a few lens profiles already built in into Lightroom 3. A screenshot below shows the profiles for Canon:

What really is Metadata…?

metadataHello everyone, today we will talk about Metadata. I get asked about Metadata quite a lot and here is the explanation for everyone.

Metadata in its simplest explanation is “data about data”. Metadata is a structured information about the original primary data which can come from your digital camera just to give an example. Many different industries use Metadata but we will focus on digital imaging here.

Metadata information can be found in Photoshop as File Info command under File Menu. It is an Adobe implementation of the IPTC specification (IPTC is International Press and Telecommunications Council, they originally deployed metadata). One of the categories in File Info is Decription which is used to append metadata to the images. The information that can be entered here is Copyright Information, Copyright URL, Keywords, Description, Author Name and Title etc.

Camera Data category contains all the information from the camera (EXIF data). EXIF was designed to embed at the moment of exposure all the information relating to camera’s function and image parameters. The information found here are: Camera Make and Model, Shutter Speed, Exposure, ISO Rating, Lens incl. focal length and Flash information.

Some of the Metadata information is editable, f.ex. Description and IPTC while others are not f.ex. Camera Data. This means that information about the author, copyright and description can be easily deleted by anyone using Photoshop and then saved with the file, f.ex. an image can be marked as Unknown instead of Copyrighted.

File Info dialog box can be now found across all Creative Suite 4. Metada can also be quickly added to the whole set set of images in Adobe Bridge or Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
