Layers in Lightroom?

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Perfect LayersThis is probably one of the “most missing” features in Lightroom. This is also a question I get a lot from people on my Lightroom courses.

By the way, have a look on my Lightroom courses here:

SaiTraining.co.uk – Lightroom training.

Now, let’s get back to talking about layers in Lightroom. We’re not here to talk about my Adobe Certified Training in Lightroom. At least not today.

Let’s talk about “Lightroom layers”. OnOne software created a new plug-in for Lightroom – Perfect Layers. Using Perfect Layers, you can combine a number of images and create a single, layered document. According to OnOne software, Perfect Layers will have support for Adobe Bridge and Apple Aperture.

With Perfect Layers you can create and edit multi-layered Photoshop files directly within Photoshop Lightroom or use it to combine images from within other applications. Use it to change skies, composite multiple images together and retouch portraits using the built-in blend modes.

Perfect Layers is now available as a public free preview that can be downloaded from here:

Have fun! :-)

Lightroom Quick Tips

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

LightrooomThis time, I’ve got some Lightroom Quick Tips for you. Some time savers and unknown keyboard shortcuts to help you work more efficiently and quickly inL:ightroom. It’s all about getting up to speed, using keyboard shortcuts effectively and mastering Lightroom.

I am always on the lookout for new things to learn about Lightroom, whether it is a new keyboard shortcut or a menu I missed somewhere, there is always something new to learn to become the master in Lightroom.

Here’s a couple of Tips and Tricks in Lightroom for you for today. If you have any favourites, share them with us here. I’ll be happy to post some more of these magical Tips and Tricks for you.

Let’s start:

  1. Use / (forward slash key) to compare original version of the image with the edited version after making some adjustments to the image – in Develop Module
  2. Use L key on the keyboard to dim the lights so you could focus on the image itself. The Lightroom interface will get darker and the image will stay the same. Press L again and the whole interface will go black (except image once again).
  3. Get access to all keyboard shortcuts for the Module you’re in by pressing Ctrl + / (Mac: Cmd + /).
  4. Use J to display Clipping on images.

I hope you enjoyed these little Tips and Tricks. See you tomorrow!

Automating your Workflow in Lightroom

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

LightroomHello, you remember my friend Gene McCullagh, right?

Gene is an Adobe Community Professional, he writes about Lightroom on his website that I am going to point you to in just a moment and I have been writing about Gene in the past.

He has a very interesting post about automating your workflow in Lightroom that I want to share with you. The article explains how to use a tool called Automator on a Mac to automate and streamline your workflow.

Even though the article described here works only on a Mac platform (Automator is an Apple tool using AppleScript), Windows users may find it useful as well so keep on reading.

Here’s a link for you:

HDR Photo Organization

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Hdr Pro in Photoshop CS5Hello again,

I am pretty sure you have heard about HDR before. Just a quick few words about HDR to start with you with:

What really is HDR – High Dynamic Range? It’s a way to capture all the details in the image you take (including highlights and shadows that are usually clipped).

As in Photoshop CS4 so in Photoshop CS5 you can take a number of bracketed images and merge them together into an incredible composite with all the highlights and shadows. What makes HDR Pro so outstanding, is its superb controls and fantastic results! You can output HDR images as 32-Bit, 16-Bit or 8-Bit images. Just bear in mind that only 32-Bit image can store all the HDR image data.

You may have seen some of my tutorials on HDR. If you haven’t, here are the links for you:

Today, I want to talk to you about some photo organization techniques in Lightroom. I have found an interesting tutorial from Matt Kloskowski about HDR organization in Lightroom. Here’s the link for you:.

Feedback site for Photoshop Family applications

Monday, April 4th, 2011

psFeedbackSiteHeaderHello everyone! I hope you are great today! :-)

Adobe launched a new website – a feedback site for Photoshop Family applications. It’s a great place to find out more about Photoshop Family applications and any future releases.

It’s a great place where you can discuss future versions/features of Adobe products. You can also report any bugs and discuss them with the Adobe team. The purpose behind the Photoshop Feedback site is to make Adobe products better, improve them with insights from the users.

Here’s a message from Photoshop Family:

Share an Idea, Ask a Question or Report a Problem and get feedback from Adobe and other passionate users.

Here’s what the website looks like:

Painter Tool in Lightroom and SSDs with Terry White

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Photoshop Lightroom TV - Episode 34Good morning to everyone, I hope you are having great time this Friday! :-)

Have you watched the last episode of PhotoshopLightroomTV? There is a number of great tutorials as every week. In case you missed it, here’s a link for you:

Photoshop Lightroom TV – Episode 34.

Are you using Painter Tool in Lightroom? I hope you are as it is a fantastic tool with many exciting options. This is definitely a tool that speeds up your workflow. As an example, you can use Painter tool to quickly rotate images or add keywords. As part of the last Episode of Photoshop Lightroom TV I am showing a tutorial on Painter Tool in Lightroom.

Another interesting topic I would like to share with you is Solid State Drives. You may have heard a lot about these drives and yes, they are faster than “regular” drives. Terry White has a great video that he created comparing SSDs (Solid State Drives) and a SATA Drive on 2 laptops side by side.

Watch the video and notice the difference in speed between these 2 kinds of hard drives. Here’s a link for you:

Enjoy and have a great weekend! :-)

Photoshop LightroomWelcome everyone! :-)

We had a total blast yesterday on our next meetup for the London Photoshop Lightroom Group!

Thank you to all of you who came yesterday! You’re fantastic! We had great time!

This time, we quickly went through the Import process, this time importing images from a hard drive (adding them into the Catalogue) and then started sorting the images/rejecting in the Library Module.

Then, we jumped into the Develop Module and we spent the rest of the session within Develop Module, editing/developing images. It was a lot of fun and we got really excited, especially about the Graduated Filter and the Adjustment Brush! :-)

Feel free to join us, we have more than 100 members and new members are joining us all the time. Here’s our website:
