Optimizing Performance in Photoshop

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Photoshop UpdatesGood morning, I hope you’re having a great day. Today we’ll talk about optimizing performance in Photoshop (Photoshop CS5).

There are four important points in optimizing performance in Photoshop:

  • optimize your hardware
  • optimize Photoshop Preferences
  • your working habits in Photoshop
  • speed up your Operating System

Let’s start with the hardware. Here’s what you need to consider:

fast processor – the speed of the CPU limits the speed of Photoshop. Photoshop CS5 requires a multicore processor of 2GHz or faster. Bear in mind that the more processors you have the less you get from each additional processor

lots of RAM – get as much RAM as you can or as much as your computer allows (this may be limited by the motherboard). Photoshop uses R AM to process images. If there is not enough RAM memory, Photoshop starts using the scratch disk – usually the primary hard drive. It is faster to access the information using RAM than a scratch disk.

How much RAM can Photoshop access? Here you go:

32 bit Photoshop – 32 bit OS – 1.7GB

32 bit Photoshop – 64 bit OS – 3.2GB

64 bit Photoshop – 64 bit OS – as much RAM as you can fit into your computer

large hard drive – Photoshop reads and writes into the hard drive all the time. That’s why the faster the hard drive the faster Photoshop will write into the hard drive. Photoshop CS5 requires at least 1GB of space on Windows and at least 2GB of space on Mac.

That’s all for today. Have a lovely weekend and on Monday we’ll talk about the second point on our list – optimize Photoshop Preferences.

A woman burning in flames

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Good morning,

Today I have a tutorial for you. A tutorial on creating a woman burning in flames. How good does it sound?

Here’s a tutorial I have found and I would like to share it with you. The author of the tutorial is Jayan Saputra. In this tutorial Jayan is showing how to manipulate a photograph so it looks like a woman is burning in flames.

The whole idea of an article is to create a nice illustration, one that looks very interesting, using some simple techniques and a few tools including Brush Tool and also using the Warp command.

Here’s the link for you:

Photoshop Tablet Apps

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Good morning to everyone,

Today we continue the topic of the recent release by Adobe – new applications for iPad that were recently released. I was writing about this on the recent post last week so you can catch up by following the link below:

Adobe has announced Adobe Photoshop Touch SDK & Apps!

What we have here are apps that you can use to connect iPad to Photoshop on your computer and use certain features from your tablet on the computer.

The applications are not that advanced but they have some potential and I’m pretty sure they will be improved in the future versions. To give you an idea of what they do, here’s an example of a few applications:

Eazel – is an application that you can use to do some finger painting. To get access to the tools, just place all your five fingers on the tablet screen. You can also send a sketch to Photoshop from the application.

Adobe Easel

Color Lava – an application that you can use to mix the colours on the tablet. You can also create colour swatches and send them to Photoshop! Pretty cool!

I hope you enjoyed it and see you tomorrow! Enjoy your day! :-)

Colour Mangement in Photoshop

Friday, April 8th, 2011

As you work with images, you are going to move the images between the devices. When you move your images between different devices, bear in mind that different devices (scanner, monitor, printer etc) have different gamut (range of colour). Each device works within a specific range of colour variations that it can display. Because of these variations, colours may shift in appearance when you move images between different devices.

The problem of working with different colour spaces can be solved by using a colour management system. Colour Management system in Photoshop handles these choices and they can be set up in Color Settings dialog box that’s found under Edit menu (Edit->Color Settings).

Here’s a screenshot:

Colour Settings in Photoshop

The settings you choose in Color Settings dialog box will define how the colours are being applied for RGB and CMYK.

Here’s a screenshot of Color Settings dialog box:

So what’s happening when you open a file in Photoshop? Well, Photoshop is comparing colours in your file’s colour space with the colours defined in Color Settings dialog box. What I do when I set up colour in Photoshop is I check option called: Ask When Opening. If this option is checked, Photoshop will ask you what you want to do if the colour spaces don’t match.

I hope you find this information valuable. Enjoy! :-)

Photoshop vs Photoshop Elements – Battle!

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Photoshop FamilyGood morning everyone! It is Monday morning and the new week has begun. :-)

Today we’re going to talk about software. And we’re going to decide which one is better, more suitable for you.

The Battle has begun! Photoshop or Photoshop Elements? Let’s decide!  ;-)

I often get this question:

What is the difference between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements? Is it worthy paying much more for Photoshop?

I will try to answer this important question today. If you are just a home user, you can probably do most of your work with Elements, however if you want to get into professional world – as a graphic designer or photographer – Photoshop is clearly way to go. Photoshop offers many more advanced editing tools and features.

Here’s a list of some of the features found in Photoshop CS5 that are not in Photoshop Elements 9:

  • CMYK and Lab Colour Mode
  • Channels Panel
  • Custom Actions for Batch Processing
  • Slicing for Web
  • Quick Mask Mode
  • Vanishing Point Filter
  • Smart Objects
  • Puppet Warp
  • Pen Tool
  • Mixer Brush

and many more. This is not a complete list.

Photoshop Elements, on the other hand, has some features not available in Photoshop:

  • Cookie Cutter Tool
  • Photo Organizer with some powerful features
  • Drop-in Frames and Backgrounds
  • Templates for Photo Books, Greeting Cards.

So it all comes down to how you use the application and what you use it for. Photoshop Elements is much cheaper than Photoshop. However, if you need professional tools (for retouching for example), then Photoshop is worth the price difference.

Images with rounded corners in Photoshop

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Photoshop cornersSome time ago I showed you a tutorial on creating images with rounded corners in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. This time I am going to share with you how to create images with rounded corners in Photoshop. I will be using Photoshop CS5 but it works in any version of Photoshop.

As with any technique in Photoshop, there are zillions of ways to achieve the effect. The one I am about to share with you is just one technique that I have been using for a while and it works fine. I like the simplicity and speed of the effect.

Images with rounded corners are very popular on the web nowadays and every web designer should know how to achieve this effect quickly and easily. Many websites look so much nicer when the images have nice rounded edges and blend into the background.

Without further ado, let’s have a look at creating rounded corners using Adobe Photoshop. Here’s a video for you to watch and enjoy:
